Oakland Track Night FAQ's
We know that coming out to events can be intimidating, and we are here to reassure you that track night in Oakland is really fun and super welcoming! We get a lot of questions from folks who want to know what it's like at track night, so we thought we'd answer some of them here.
What are the basic details?
Track happens every Wednesday night at 6pm at Laney College. It's coached by Renegade's owner, Victor Diaz, with support from our community members.
Who comes to track?
Everyone! Newer runners, super experienced runners, older runners, middle and high schoolers, ultra-marathoners, and people training for their first 5K. You don't have to know anything about running track to come—we are always happy to show newcomers the ropes! The workout is between 3-6 miles so you should be comfortable running that distance. If you are just starting running and you feel like something shorter/with more walking would work better for you, Town Strides also meets on Wednesday nights.
What is the pace?
We have a number of pace groups that can accommodate most runners. Our pace groups work together to help everyone do the workout and feel comfortable.
What should I bring to track?
Layers for before and after the workout (it gets chilly in the evening here), your watch (don't stress if you don't have one yet!) some water, and nutrition if you are used to taking in nutrition during your workout.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free.
Can I do my own workout?
Because we have so many people come to track, it becomes unsafe if people do their own workout. Therefore, we ask that you come to track to participate in the group workout.
What is the flow of track night?
We suggest you start the evening with a warmup on your own on the track. There are always very friendly people to warm up with. Most people finish their warmups by 615. Then we meet for an overview of the workout, do some drills and strides, and then do the workout. We're usually done around 8.
Where should I park?
You can park in the lot at the Laney Fieldhouse, or along the street. You can also take Bart; the closest station is Lake Merritt.
Is this a dating group?
Absolutely not.
